Charleston rock ‘n’ roll radio veteran Jim Voigt staged a classy comeback last month with a series of weekend morning programs on The Bridge at 105.5 FM. Best known among locals as “The Critic,” he spent a number of months away from town last fall, shortly after leaving Apex Broadcasting’s 96 Wave, which flipped its format and changed its name to Chuck FM in late August. The Critic has been hosting shows and spinning tunes on the local airwaves since 1992. He knows his rock history, follows new releases, digs underground rock, and connects the dots with colorful (and sometimes brutally honest) commentary over the mic. Opinionated, hyper-educated, funny — the guy lives up to his nickname, and it’s great to have him back. His current programs include Saturday morning’s “The Critic’s Hootenanny” and Sunday morning’s “The Critic’s Choice,” both airing from 9 a.m. to noon.
