The awkward and unexpected “flip” was almost funny. With no prior announcement or warning, at 5 p.m. on Fri. Aug. 31, Charleston’s long-running radio station 96 Wave suddenly flipped from the “alternative” format to an “adult variety hits” (a.k.a. “classic hits”) format and revealed a new name — Chuck FM. Execs at local Apex Broadcasting delivered the final punch to Wave, knocking it out forever (“but it’s still online!”). With no DJs, weather or traffic reports, or anything human at the 96.1 FM frequency, veteran Wave supporters took the flip as a giant middle finger. It was a lousy wave goodbye and a really lame way to crash after a year of bumbling and fumbling.
