It’s funny to call The Post and Courier, The Newsless Courier. And it’s also kind of true. (Now, it’s not as funny as calling the City Paper, the Shitty Paper, nor is it as accurate — that is if by “shitty” you mean stumbling out of Moe’s at 2 a.m. and falling into the arms of a bi-curious Citadel cadet.) But my stars and garters, if they don’t bust out a mean investigative piece. The series on mercury was pretty good, as was the report on the two Wando High robbers. But the story that stood seven stories above them all was the P&C‘s epic on life at the Charleston County Jail, a truly heartbreaking story about men and women living in the foulest of foul conditions. Most shocking of all was the photo of a mentally-disturbed inmate dipping his bread into the toilet and eating it. Survivor ain’t got nothing on the CCJ.
