Sen. Jim DeMint faced a defeat in his push against earmarks Thursday when the Senate refused a budget amendment that would have put a one-year stop on earmarks to give some time for reforms. It drew support from all three presidential candidates, but fell far short of the 60 votes required for approval.
“Americans want the bridges to nowhere and earmark scandals to stop,” DeMint said in a release following the vote.
Actually, they want the bridges to nowhere to stop — unless the bridge is in their district.
(Congressman Henry Brown’s) most recent questionnaire … asked “Do you believe that I, as your Congressman, should continue to fight to get our fair share of funding for needed projects?”
Even though Sen. Jim DeMint, R-S.C., has been leading the anti-earmark fight, more than 90 percent of the respondents told Brown to keep fighting for such projects.
