In recent remarks, Sen. John McCain said Iran was helping Al Qaeda, but the country is actually helping the militants on the other side of the civil war in Iraq.

The campaign is saying that he “misspoke” and “immediately corrected himself.” But that’s not how the transcript appears. It wasn’t a slip of the tongue, it was clear that John McCain’s understanding of the complicated battle in Iraq, which is supposed to be his strongest selling point, is less Simon and more Paula.

We’re not faulting the guy. We’re not Middle Eastern experts either. But if we were McCain, we’d find something else to hang our hat on. Foreign policy ain’t it.
