South Carolina schools chief Jim Rex announced today that, after an online poll, the new statewide standardized test would be known as the Palmetto Assessment of State Standards (PASS). The name was selected by the online votes of more than 6,000 people.
While the former test sought both “achievement” and a “challenge,” this new tests mere “assessment” is much more muted than a few of the other options rebuffed by the voters.
The selection beat out four other finalists: STARS, State Test of Achievement and Readiness for Success; STEP, State Test of Educational Progress; PAL, Palmetto Assessment of Learning; and SCYE, South Carolina Yearly Evaluation.
That said, I like it much better than PAL or SCYE.
