About a year ago, I was at a conference downtown where a speaker announced that the word “grenn” was dead. It had been used so much and stretched so thin that it had lost all meaning.

This year’s word may as well be “outsider,” and you can point to this Jim DeMint fundraiser when asked what the nail in the coffin was:

Two Washington Outsiders

U.S. Sen. Jim DeMint/ Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich

One Conservative Mission

Washington outsider?!  First, DeMint is celebrating a decade in Washington. Second, Gingrich spent 20 years in the Capitol — most of those at the center of the Washington establishment. Can you really claim outsider status when you were chased out by your own folks? If so, what’s it worth?

Apparently, to DeMint, it’s worth $200 a couple and $1,000 for sponsors.
