This just in from Kidd’s publicist . . .

On Thursday October 9, author Sue Monk Kidd will visit Burke High School to discuss her novel The Secret Life of Bees with students. Ms. Kidd will be in the Media Center from 9:00 – 10:00 A.M. Book Discussion will be followed by a q & a with students and teachers and a book signing. She will meet Dr. Kathy Gehr’s 9th grade English class, as well as students who completed the Lowcountry Initiative of the Literary Arts (LILA)s Poets in the Schools program in previous years. Viking Press, Ms. Kidd’s publisher, provided copies of the book to students in the new Advanced Placement Academy at Burke. Burke High School is located at 244 President Street in downtown Charleston.

This special author visit is happening in conjunction with the Charleston premiere of the film based on Sue Monk Kidd’s novel The Secret Life of Bees on October 16th at The Terrace Theater and the reception immediately following at The Harbour Club. Reception tickets available at Blue Bicycle Books, 420 King St., 843-722-2666. Proceeds will go towards LILA’s fund-raising goal of $30,000 to support the “Poets in the Schools” program, LILA’s ongoing public school initiative. The initial goal is to continue funding the Burke High School poetry class and literary magazine, now in its third year with private funding. Its first two years were funded through a Center for Partnerships to Improve Education at The College of Charleston. Future plans include launching similar efforts in under-served elementary schools in Charleston.
