Holy City Bike Co-op

What it is: A group formed to provide community bike workshops, advocate bicycle safety, repair and knowledge, and promote bicycles as viable transportation.

What $25 Would Do

•Fund purchase of bike tools, bike parts, supplies

•Go into larger fund for renting a permanent space

•A space to house parts, host workshops, and where volunteers can maintain regular hours

•Working bikes and bike parts

•Time, especially at monthly workshops (First Sunday of every month from 3-5 p.m. in Marion Square)

Charleston Waterkeepers

What it is: Charleston’s new affiliate of the national organization strives to improve the quality of our waterways through community involvement, scientific monitoring, and legal action while advocating against the degradation and pollution of our water.

What would $25 do:

•Help to cover startup costs and filing fees

•Fund office supplies, website maintenance, and logo design

•Purchase testing and monitoring equipment and rubber waders for volunteers

•Digital camcorder (to document patrols and potential pollution)

Barrier Islands Free Medical Clinic

What it is

To understand and serve the health and wellness needs of the medically underserved and their households who live or work on Johns and Wadmalaw islands.

What $25 would do

Help fund patient care, the purchase of medical supplies, and the overall operational costs to cope with patients without health care

• Glucose meters with extra testing strips for diabetic patients

• Office supplies

• Basic medical supplies like alcohol, gauze, and Band-Aids

What it is

An organization dedicated to enhancing the quality of life for persons living with HIV and providing prevention resources for schools, churches, and community organizations.

What $25 would do

• Provide round trip transportation to one doctor’s appointment

• Pay for one hour of nutritional counseling

• Allow case managers to make two home visits

• Cover the monthly co-pay for one medication

Lowcountry Food Bank

What It Is

The Lowcountry Food Bank feeds the poor and hungry of the 10 coastal counties of South Carolina by soliciting and distributing healthy food and grocery products to nonprofit agencies serving the poor, and educates the public about the problems of and solutions to domestic hunger.

What $25 Would Do

• Directly fund the Food Bank’s services and programs, including the Kids’ Cafe, an afterschool program that provides hot meals for low-income students

What It Is

LHT is a regional advocate for affordable housing which provides financing for the production and preservation of affordable housing.

What $25 Would Do

• Housing trust funds leverage approximately $9 for every $1 dollar invested, so $25 would equal $225 in community development

• 1 percent of closing cost/down payment on a home.

• 1 percent of acquisition financing for a Habitat house.

• Provide one affordable housing developer’s how-to manual

• Provide one two-hour session for affordable housing developers

• Commitments from local governments to prioritize affordable housing

• Financial commitments from area banks to address affordable housing

• Any and all, big or small funding contributions
