No uglies at CBT fund-raiser
Ballerinas, artists, and diamond-clad socialites rubbed elbows at Thursday night’s Art for Dance Gala at Lowndes Grove Plantation. It was originally planned as a Great Gatsby-themed party back in hurricane season, but they rescheduled, and were blessed with an unseasonably warm November night. Fish Restaurant had three food stations set up around the tents, and local artists like Arianne Comer King and Jack Alterman had their works on display and mingled with other guests. Then came the real treat of the night: Jill Eathorne Bahr introduced her troupe of “elegant athletes in a tight-fitting package,” and we were given an intimate performance of New-York inspired dance from members of the Charleston Ballet Company. Some of the male dancers danced to “New York, New York” then ten of the ballerinas high-kicked their way through a few swingy numbers, dressed in hot pants and fishnets — it seems that Bahr wasn’t lying when she said she doesn’t hire any ugly dancers. And while barely no one was bidding on art, the event definitely seemed to achieve its goal: to inspire folks to support Charleston’s ballet company. Pictures coming soon.
