The Gibbes Museum of Art announced the second year of the Elizabeth and Mallory Factor Prize for Southern Art. The award is $10,000 given annually beginning this year when a panel of judges chose Jeff Whetstone, a young photographer from Durham, N.C., as the 2008 winner. Whetstone prevailed over much more well-known artists, such as Radcliffe Bailey (the painter), William Christenberry (the photographer), and Charleston artist Philip Simmons (the sculptor). The Factor Prize aims to establish an online archive of Southern artists used by curators, collectors, academicians, and the public. Applications can be submitted through Jan. 30, 2009.
