Not So Little Rascals

The North Charleston Coliseum folks just announced that modern country act Rascal Flatts is set to perform a concert at the venue on Sat. Jan. 24 at 7:30 p.m. Headlining what’s billed as “The Bob that Head Tour 2009,” the award-winning, Nashville-based vocal group — Gary LeVox, Jay DeMarcus, and Joe Don Rooney — welcomes special guest Jessica Simpson (with Charleston-based pedal steel wiz Jay Jackson in tow!). This is only one of three Rascal Flatts shows in the Carolinas, including concerts Thurs. Jan. 22 at the BI-LO Center in Greenville and Fri. Jan. 23 at the LJVM Coliseum in Winston-Salem. Scorch the Porch at the Mill

Last week, Lynn and the gang at Park Circle tavern The Mill (1026 E. Montague Ave., 843-225-2650) kicked off a new weekly series called Scorch the Porch Wednesday, featuring all-you-can-eat-oysters and live music at 7 p.m. Acoustic players Megan Jean, Byrne Klay, and company will handle an organic mix of folk, Americana, and country on Wed. NOC Unplugged

Stepping away from a battery of distortion pedals and oversized drums, the members of local rock band Number One Contender — vocalist Reid Johnson, guitarists Alan Price and Damon Jackson, bassist Jonathan Holt, and drummer Paul Huck — perform a free, all-acoustic show at J. Misfits 2008

Legendary U.S. punks The Misfits (minus original lead singer Glenn Danzig) are scheduled to perform in Hilton Head at the Shoreline Ballroom on Wed. Dec. 10 with support from The Independents. The Misfits kicked off their “extended 30th anniversary tour” last summer, beginning with the Resurrection Fest in Spain and continuing with shows in the Czech Republic, South America, Mexico, and the U.S. Bassist Jerry Only is doing most of the singin’ and growling these days. Free ‘Fu at the Tavern

Local band Allnightkungfu hits the stage at the Village Tavern on Sat. Dec. 13 for three full sets of what singer/guitarist Stuart “Allnight” Johnson calls “Southern stoner-rock.” Johnson, bassist “Kung Fu” Jerry Beale, drummer Marc “Killer” Keller, and guitarist Harry J. Tone Box: at Wired

This week, City Paper web editor Josh Curry noticed a cool feature on www.scbiznews.com (the bi-monthly news page from SCBIZ magazine) announcing the recent success of Charleston-based web entrepreneur Jason Bradford, whose web-based music label Tone Box Digital was selected as a finalist in the Wired small-business competition. Months ago, Wired issued a call for up-and-coming small businesses “aligned with its mentality” to enter the competition. Bradford launched Tone Box Digital in 2004 and currently works with over 30 artists. He is the only finalist in the competition from the South. Volcano Suns on CD

N.C. indie label Merge Records recently announced plans to re-release the first two albums from Boston’s legendary underground rock trio Volcano Suns — a noisy and joyfully unrefined band led by drummer/singer Peter Prescott, of Mission of Burma fame. Originally released on the acclaimed indie label Homestead in the mid ’80s, The Bright Orange Years (which included the band’s college radio “hit” song “Jak”) and All Night Lotus Party have never before been available on CD. Both albums have been re-mastered by engineer Bob Weston — a longtime member of the band and a busy audio engineer in his own right. Due on Jan. 27, both albums include bonus tracks from out-of-print seven-inch records, radio sessions, and demos. The Suns were one of a handful of cool Boston bands to ever perform at the long-gone Club Dog Alley on King Street back in the day.
