We’d take any excuse for a speedo-laden Michael Phelps shot, but there’s a sort-of good reason today.

The Charleston City Council is expected to consider a $50,000 feasibility study (half of it paid by Mount Pleasant) for a major aquatic center in the region that could be used for regional and national tournaments (and, we’d certainly hope, at least one celebrity appearance in our lifetime).

City Councilwoman Kathleen Wilson (quite the swimmer herself) has brought up the idea more than once during city budget discussions, with Mayor Joe Riley giving a polite “wait and see” response. It would seem the idea’s time has come — amid a severe economic crisis and one of the most difficult city budget years in Riley’s more than three decades at the helm.

One would hope that the city will fork over this $25,000 with a strong desire to find money from private or non-profit areas to actually pay for the aquatic center. If approved the study should be completed in May.
