LANGERADO OFF
The 2009 Langerado Music Festival was canceled last week due to sluggish ticket sales. Already in its seventh year, Langerado was set to take place March 6-8 in Miami’s Bicentennial Park. “Langerado’s independent local promoters, faced with a very tough decision in a dismal economy, canceled the 2009 event only after every possible option was exhausted,” read a press release. JAZZ & MARDI GRAS
The weekly “winter jazz series” at the cozy Voodoo Tiki Bar & Lounge (15 Magnolia Road) kicked off last month and garnered great reactions. “Jazz has been a fantastic success, and it seems like it’s only getting better,” reports proprietor Jen Kulick. The venue’s “5 Days of Carnival” event runs from Fri. Feb. 20 through Tues. Feb. 24 with authentic Dixieland, special brunches, fund-raising dinners, and a Fat Tuesday bash with live jazz and jams from the Charlton Singleton Brass Band and Quiana Parler & Friends (see Music Board). Mellow Mushroom’s “Winter Jazz Series” — presented by Jazz Artists of Charleston at 309 King St. — continues on Mon. SUGARLAND RETURNS
Popular country/pop band Sugarland — led by guitarist Kristian Bush and vocalist Jennifer Nettles — returns to Charleston on Thurs. May 21 at the Family Circle Cup Stadium on Daniel Island behind their latest album, Love on the Inside. Sugarland recently won a pair of Grammy awards for their hit single “Stay” as “Best Country Performance By A Duo Or Group With Vocals” and “Best Country Song.” Billy Currington opens the show. The JAC recently announced a new series: “Jazz Factory” hosted by local vocalist Ann Caldwell at Huger’s (587 King St.) every Wednesday and Thursday evening (starting this week) from 7-10 p.m. Caldwell welcomes a rotation of guest players and singers for a mix of blues, soul, and jazz.
