Friday night, the newly-formed Charleston Arts Coalition hosted their first event: a Brazilian-themed bash at the City Gallery. The normally peaceful space was transformed into a lively carnival scene, as artists and supporters packed the place to celebrate the new organization. Capoeira Charleston performed their mesmerizing martial arts/dance routine, traditional dancers led a whooping conga line throughout the gallery (upstairs and down), and organizers served up some Brazilian cuisine, including a dish that looked like a giant layer cake and tasted like every kind of delicious sandwich you’ve ever had smushed together. Throughout the gallery, party-goers were encouraged to fill out short surveys on what Charleston’s arts scene needs. Judging by the enthusiastic crowd and the big-name list of locals involved in the project, CAC should be an influential addition to the Holy City arts scene. —EJ
