About a year ago, Kruger Smith, mayor pro-tem of Mt. Pleasant, said a performing arts center would be ideal for the town’s new Waterfront Memorial Park and its 22 acres along the Cooper River. For the arts community, this was like manna from heaven. A performing arts center!

Praise Jesus! But the idea fizzled fast when it came to light that Smith had no intention of pushing for it. He was merely pushing back against the original idea: a dog park. What at first looked like a crazy battle between artists and dog lovers turned out to be nothing. All we can say is that it’s our loss, not theirs.
