James Island Splash Zone

Woe betide anyone indulging in horseplay at Splash Zone at James Island County Park. Up to 20 lifeguards are on duty at any given time, ready to blow the whistle on troublemakers. These attentive sentries are rigorously trained and constantly supervised. Nicki Dooley is the safety programs manager who watches the watchmen. “Supervisors are constantly on deck,” she says, “making sure our staff is guarding like they should. We soon weed out the ones who are not taking it seriously.” The lifeguards undergo a 20-hour Starfish Aquatics training course, and there is daily in-service training, with staff chalking up eight hours of schooling per month.
