When looking for a fashion plate, we’d be hard-pressed to pick new Statehouse Rep. Wendell Gilliard (D-Charleston) with his famous tracksuits and distaste for Marion Square swimwear. But the popular politician spent his last few months as a Charleston City Councilman attempting to ban baggy pants that often intentionally show off the wearer’s favorite Joe Boxers. It was the kind of battle that was more fitting for a high school dress code debate than a City Council meeting, complete with a mannequin showing what sagging pants look like (which made for a delicious photograph on several cell phone cameras). It never made it to a vote, but fellow Sen. Robert Ford, another member of the fashion police, has introduced a similar proposal for a statewide ban. That said, we wouldn’t suggest investing in belt manufacturing anytime soon.
