2009 has been a big year so far with the swearing in of our first black president. It’s also the 50th anniversary of the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater Company. It’s one of the those accidents of history that really means something. Not just because Ailey and Obama identified themselves as black, but because they share a common way of thinking about themselves. They are black, but not just black. They are Americans. Ailey, who died in 1989, would have a lot to say to our new president. Surely, the prez knew Ailey’s work, especially his classic Revelations. Here it is.
