It all started when two Toronto teenagers, Steve “Lips” Kudlow and Robb Reiner made a pact to rock out together forever. Keeping true to their promise, the two went on to form the heavy metal band Anvil, otherwise known as “the demi-gods of Canadian metal.” Their 1982 album, Metal on Metal was praised as one of the heaviest metal albums in history and went on to influence metal giants like Slayer, Anthrax, and Metallica. Yet somehow, Anvil never managed to achieve fame and fortune, and sank into obscurity instead. Anvil!: The Story of Anvil, opening on Friday at the Terrace Theater on James Island, is the story of two friends trying one last time to make it big. Director Sacha Gervasi follows the band on their quest to stardom and together they encounter hilarious mishaps and touching moments of despair as they struggle to keep it together while chasing their dream. This as a real life version of Spinal Tap is getting rave reviews. Entertainment Weekly’s Owen Gleiberman says, “It’s a hilarious, and unexpectedly moving, documentary about the greatest metal band you’ve probably never heard of.” Right now, this sucker is pulling in 98 percent at Rotten Tomatoes.
