We’re always on the lookout for great products from the Palmetto State. Call us suckers, but we just can’t resist that hometown pride.
There are certain things that don’t come to mind when you think of South Carolina, though. That said, Native Tongue Gourmet Sauces is really throwing us for a loop with their all-natural Japanese Pink Sauce. It’s like that tasty concoction that you never can recreate when you visit your favorite Japanese steakhouse. It called many things — shrimp sauce, light sauce — but it’s always been elusive, hiding out only at these restaurants.
Jason McElveen, however, managed to track the sauce down and bring it to the appreciative general public. Expanding on a senior project he was given as a business major at Wofford College, McElveen took a fictional assignment and made it into a real product. After consulting with food scientists on which sauce he liked the best, Jason brought his favorite to the market.
Native Tongue’s sauce debuted in 2007 and can now be found in Piggly Wiggly and Whole Foods stores throughout the Southeast. You can also pick it up at the downtown Harris Teeter and Bert’s Market out on Folly Beach.
Unlike The Grudge or those ridiculous Harajuku Girls, this is one Japanese product that has been successfully translated by an American son. Domo arigato, Mr. McElveen.
