Just as gas prices are starting to make another climb toward walk-to-work levels, the Charleston Area Regional Transportation Authority (CARTA) is introducing a new summer ride campaign, including rolling out new buses and a $100 contest.

Ridership passed 4 million in 2008. In order to maintain the increased numbers, CARTA has purchased 12 additional buses similar to the current express buses that will add new routes to the ever-growing system.

Starting June 22, the “Express Yourself” text-to-win contest will encourage riders to text a message about CARTA. Weekly winners will receive a $100 gift certificate.

Also, as a part of the marketing campaign, CARTA will host its annual “Dump the Pump” day. On June 18, all residents can ride CARTA for free and promotional giveaways will be available.
