The scent of coconut butter and domestic beer hung in the humid air, punctuated by the salty breeze from across the dunes and the whiff of a nearby cigarette, as local beach bums, tipsy tourists, and bikini-clad party girls crowded the scene. Already into its 13th round, the Budweiser Bikini Bash at popular Isle of Palms venue The Windjammer was pumpin’ on Sunday (July 26). Sponsored by Bud Light Lime, 95SX, and the City Paper, the weekly series kicked off in May on the renovated beachfront deck with a rotation DJs (from Tropix International), live local bands, an animated emcee from 95SX, and a variety of bathing beauties. DJ Yonni and his crew spun a mix of funky party tunes from one corner of the deck while suntanned (and sunburned) dudes and ladies pressed in closely together (a little too tight for this writer’s comfort). After a contestant named Hannah won the loudest applause and the top spot, local band Two3Ways took the corner stage for two sets. Guest player Ben Bennett sat in with some sizzlin’ bass licks and solos. There’s one more preliminary round to go before the finals on Sun Aug. 9 (featuring ’80s cover band The Pop Machine).
