A group of Louie’s Kids supporters gathered at the Charleston Civic Design Center on Thursday night to nosh on some specially created fare at the Big Chef Little Chef event. The fundraiser paired four lucky kids with Charleston chefs to create appetizing dishes. The highlights included a faro and mint salad with heirloom tomatoes and squash soup with roasted figs and ricotta cheese. Attendees sampled the offerings and voted for their favorites. Although none of the children created desserts, Wholly Cow ice cream was on hand to finish the repast. Some guest may have been anticipating a live-action cook-off, but small conversations with the young cooks quickly allayed any disappointments. The winning chef, Tre Vaughn Davis, won over the crowd with his praise of the Louie’ Kids program and tales of his culinary aspirations. This first run was a success that could grow to an annual event with a larger venue and wider support from the city’s culinary community.
