The cozy Scoop Studios played host to Friday’s “bean-in,” the brainchild of Food + Sex magazine founder Mark Gravel. Gravel set up a table in the back of the gallery with two Cuisinart pressure cookers full of black beans and black-eyed peas. He also had rice to add to the beans for a true Southern favorite. The event was an intimate affair, due both to the size of the space and the last minute word-of-mouth publicity. The “bean-in” was intended to increase appreciation for beans as a protein, especially because of their recession-friendly low price. Throughout the Food + Sex promotion tour, Gravel has made stops at various places that he’s lived, including San Francisco, Brooklyn, Winston-Salem, and Charleston. The next stop will be back to Winston-Salem, where he’ll host a fall equinox underground dinner featuring roasted goat and pig from King’s Creek Farms. The Food + Sex guys will be in Marion Square Saturday for the Farmers Market and to spread the word about their magazine.
