We’ve been gearing up for this weekend all month. It’s jam-packed with all kinds of events, so eat your Wheaties, drink some Red Bull, or do whatever you have to do to store up some strength. You’re going to need it.
Let’s start off with the big boys. The Green Fair, sponsored by the City Paper, is painting the town green. The biggest events are Greenflix at the Bus Shed Saturday night, featuring a screening of Botany of Desire followed by an after-party. Then there’s the actual Fair on Sunday, with eco-conscious exhibitors, food vendors, and more taking over Marion Square. MOJA also hits town this weekend, kicking off with the Caribbean Street Parade and Block Party at the Custom House Friday Night.
Yesterday we did a little round-up of all the free/cheap museum promos going on Saturday and Sunday: the Smithsonian’s Museum Day, National Public Lands Day, and Museum Mile Weekend. We also pointed out some promising fashion/shopping events, like the Wagener Terrace Community Yard Sale, the Candy Shop Vintage Trunk Show at Mac + Murphy, the Sidewalk Sale at Mt. Pleasant Towne Centre, and more.
In the parties and fundraisers department, the SEWE Fall Party Friday night is always a good bet: open bar, dancing, and oysters in the Bus Shed. Pattison’s Academy is also hosting their fundraiser Friday, at the Old City Jail — always a cool venue. Some other nighttime events on Friday include the Sidewalk Chalk Charity Event at the Upper Deck (dress up as anything starting with “U,” “D,” or “T”) and Holy City Bike Co-op’s Midnight Mystery Ride, departing from Taco Boy at 11 p.m.
Saturday is the Citadel Bulldogs’ first home football game — why sit on the couch and watch when you can see it in person? The Battery is in the playoffs, playing Montreal Sunday in the series decider.
The CSO returns Saturday with their opening night, featuring Highlights from Porgy and Bess at the Gaillard. The Greek Orthodox Church is hosting a Concert in the Park on Saturday. For music (and dancing) with more of an international flair, check out the Brazil Bash at the Daily Dose on Saturday.
Some of Saturday’s most family-friendly events include the Huck Finn Children’s Fishing Festival at Colonial Lake, the Paws & Claws Pet Expo at the North Charleston Convention Center, and the Fall Plant Swap in Park Circle.
