After nearly two weeks of artistic, cultural, and musical celebration the 2009 MOJA festival will come to a rousing end this weekend.
As part of the MOJA Arts Festival, the MEHD Group welcomes the international recording artist, The O’Jays live on stage at the Family Circle Tennis Center’s stadium (161 Seven Farms Drive) on Sat. Oct. 3 at 8 p.m.
Remember those groovy hits “Love Train,” “Backstabbers,” “Use Ta Be My Girl,” and “Lonely Drifter?” Those are only a few of the Ohio-based group’s funk/soul hits and deep cuts in the set list. Up front are longtime vocalists Eddie Levert, Walter Williams, and Eric Grant. After four decades in the biz, the O’Jays were inducted into the Vocal Group Hall of Fame in 2004, and the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2005. The finale at Hampton Park (30 Mary Murray Blvd.) features a live performance from the Atlanta-based Tropical Steel Vibes (featuring Fabien on the steel drums). The veteran quartet is comprised of musicians from various parts of the Caribbean performing reggae, calypso and “other Island-flavored music.” Also on the bill are the ITISSO Jazz Band and special guests, along with Caribbean food and fireworks. Admission is free.
