The fifth annual March Madness Battle of the Bands has announced its initial dates. The locally-based, four-round series is set to take place on the A Dough Re Mi stage (1220 Ben Sawyer Blvd.) for four straight weekends in March, starting on Fri. March 5.
“Who would have thought this would go five years?” says enthusiastic organizer Stuart Johnson (of local band Allnightkungfu). “I am happy to announce that The March Madness Battle of The Bands 2010 is on, and this year, I will be bringing the battle back where it began.”
In 2006, Johnson first arranged a month’s worth of Battle of the Bands rounds at A Dough Re Mi. The rounds went well, with a wild variety of mostly metal, punk, and indie acts belting it out in front of staffers and guest judges. The contest relocated to the Village Tavern in 2007.
Every Friday and Saturday during the month of March, a variety of local and regional bands will play short sets starting at 9 p.m., battling for a chance to win $500 plus the 80 percent of the door for the night of the final round. Other prizes to be announced. Each event will be judged by local scenesters and experts.
“Unlike some local band battles, this is an open competition for original artists only … and it is completely run by musicians, with no entry fee.”
