This is Chucktown! has changed a lot since last year’s Comedy Festival. What used to be a show full of local Theatre 99 company members performing sketch comedy is now a show full of locals doing stand up, a form that’s reached new heights of popularity in this town.
Many This Is Chucktown comedians are also competing to be Charleston’s funniest person in the Comedy Festival’s Stand Up Competition, including emcee Tim Höeckel who tied for the title last year and is seriously funny (so funny he has an umlaut in his name).
Another change this year is the location. The Friday night show takes place at Centre Point Bar and Grill in North Charleston, near Tanger Mall.
“The venue isn’t really bigger,” says Höeckel, “but it’s definitely a new environment to play with, and Centre Point is always bringing in comics from all over the country.”
He says everyone is pumped and ready to rock the mic. This is Chucktown’s roster has plenty of comics familiar to local stand up fans: Dusty Slay, Tommy Hutchins, Shon Kennedy, Mark Szlachetka, David Appleton, David Roach, Erik Humphrey, and Jon Ballard.
