It’s the last weekend in January, which, in my humble opinion, calls for a celebration. Here are some ways to have fun and say good riddance to the worst month of the year.
Apparently Friday is Lady Gaga Day. We don’t know who decided this, but we’re going to go ahead and accept it — for this year, anyway. Gaga fans and dance fiends will congregate at Marion Square at 5 p.m. for a 30-minute dance-a-thon, followed by an after-party at W.O.K. Donations will be accepted for the Red Cross.
If Lady Gaga were a rock duo, she might be something like Jucifer. See them at the Village Tavern Friday night.
In arts news, Rik Freeman’s Chittlin Circuit Review opens at City Gallery on Friday. The show will feature 25 paintings by the artist on the history of the blues in segregated America. Also Friday, Spoleto’s fundraiser La Dolce Vita Auction is at the Memminger with a sumptuous hors d’oeuvres buffet, cocktail bar, and live and silent auctions.
The Charleston Home + Design Show kicks off Friday and continues through the weekend at the Gaillard. Thousands of custom home products will be showcased by local companies. On Friday night, Kitchen, Baths, + All That Jazz features wine, beer, food, and jazz from the Frank Duvall Jazz Trio.
Cynthia Rowley hosts a spring review on Friday from 6:30-8:30 p.m. On Friday and Saturday, bridal boutique Maddison Row hosts a Monique Lhuillier trunk show.
Get your leer on at one of two parties celebrating the release of some sexy new calendars. On Saturday starting at 9:30 p.m., the Lowcountry Highrollers will be guest bartending and signing copies of their pin-up calendar at the Recovery Room. Then starting at 10:30 p.m. at Pantheon, the “Men of Charleston” will sign their calendars, with all proceeds going to Lowcountry AIDS Services.
Lunacy returns to Voodoo on Saturday with body painting by John Pundt and music by Rocky Horror, DJ Sonar & Jeffet, black lights, Caroline’s drink specials, and more. Also Saturday, the Mardi Gras Ball hosted by Krewe of Charleston is at Memminger. And the Charleston Jazz Orchestra presents Swing, Swing, Swing at 7 p.m.
Sunday Funday, check out the Lowcountry Oyster Festival, aka the granddaddy of all oyster roasts, at Boone Hall. Or head to the Pour House for a Benefit for Haiti featuring bands like Gaslight Street, Skye Paige, and the Passionistas.
