The Gibbes Museum of Art recently announced their next show, which will feature select pieces from the private collection of prominent art enthusiasts Esther and James Ferguson. Though their focus of late has been on historical paintings and photography, the new exhibit will add a more modern flavor to its halls. On view starting April 30, Modern Masters from the Ferguson Collection is an assortment of works from masters of modern art like Pablo Picasso, Willem de Kooning, Robert Rauschenberg, and Christo. It’s an overview of Cubism, Abstract Expressionism, and Pop Art.
On April 13, Christo, most recently known for “The Gates” installation all around Central Park, will visit town to share images and stories of some of his and his late wife’s, Jeanne-Claude, celebrated large-scale fixtures that utilize fabric in rural and urban surroundings. Afterwards, there will be a Q&A with the audience, followed by a book signing.
Opening the Modern Masters from the Ferguson Collection will be a street party on April 29 with a backdrop inspired by Christo’s work. Guests will get to enjoy not only the art, but also live entertainment and an open bar. They’ll savor tasty “street” hors d’oeuvres from Caviar and Bananas, Charleston Grill, Fig, McCrady’s, Palmetto Café, Slightly North of Broad, Trattoria Lucca, and Voysey’s from the Tides of Kiawah Island Club.
