Military and plane buffs were pretty bummed when they found out that the Charleston Air Force Base cancelled this year’s Air Expo due to increasing commitments in Afghanistan. However, the Town of Mt. Pleasant and the City of Charleston have taken it upon themselves to co-sponsor a little air show of their own. Behold, the birth of the first Charleston Harbor Air Show, held April 17-18 at 2 p.m., featuring none other than the Blue Angels themselves. Spectators will get to witness some top notch flying with aerial swoops, loop-di-loops, and nearly touching wingtips while in tight, unwavering formation. The free show centers over Charleston Harbor and the Cooper River; prime viewing spots on the peninsula include the Charleston Maritime Center, Waterfront Park, White Point Garden and the Battery, and Liberty Square. In Mt. Pleasant, head to Patriots Point aboard the USS Yorktown. Bring a portable radio with you: A station will broadcast the lead Blue Angels pilot’s narration of the demonstration. You might also want to bring some earplugs, Head here for more information, or call (843) 723-3746.
