King Street’s Design District welcomed spring last Thursday night with the bi-annual Design Walk. Shopkeepers opened their doors wide, tempting passersby with treats and specials. The crowd was a mix of young freeloaders getting boozy off the complimentary wine and well-heeled older folks who might actually be able to afford one of those incredible bathtubs at SIG. (Me, I’ll have to settle for a faucet for now … or maybe just a knob.)

The event encourages walkers to stop in places they might not even glance at on a normal shopping day. King Street Kitchen Company’s high-end cabinetry provided a perfect backdrop for enjoying milk and cookies from Charleston Cookie Company. Siematic celebrated their one-year anniversary with oyster shooters, and shoppers at Lesesne checked out Sideshow Press’ newest line of stationery. DJ Sonar started a mini dance party at Dwelling, and Blue Bicycle Books hosted a signing with Charleston magazine’s Melissa Bigner. Above the Silver Dollar, a curious few got a sneak peek of the soon-to-open One collective.

The Planned Parenthood-sponsored art show Re-Nude drew a big crowd of art lovers, not to mention a crowd of protesters waving signs in front of the building. But the drama only added to the excitement of the always-enjoyable evening, which for many ended with a big-screen viewing of Twilight: New Moon in Marion Square. And that was the only part of the night that sucked. (Blood, that is.)
