The Charleston Jazz Initiative (CJI), a project of the CofC’s School of the Arts in partnership with the Avery Research Center for African American History and Culture, presents the Legends Festival from June 4-6.
The Humanities Council of South Carolina awarded a $6,750 grant to the CJI in February to help fund the work behind the Legends Festival.
CJI’s co-founder Dr. Karen Chandler, an associate professor of arts management in the CofC School of the Arts, serves as the project director for the grant.
The Festival aims to honor jazz legends with Charleston and South Carolina roots, as well as other internationally recognized musicians.
Workshops, master classes, and musical performances are scheduled. Saxophonist Houston Person (a native of Florence) performs a jazz garden luncheon on Fri. June 4 at 11 a.m. at the Stern Center Garden.
The JazzEd Fest interprets the story of Charleston’s Jenkins Orphanage Band through music, dance, and spoken word at the Sottile Theatre on Fri. June 4 at 3:30 p.m.
A special event titled Charleston’s Songwriter and Arranger: Fud Livingston will be held on Sat. June 5 from 6-8 p.m. at the Riviera Theatre to honor the life and career of Charleston clarinetist, songwriter, and arranger Joseph “Fud” Livingston (1906-1957).
Charleston Jazz Initiative founder and co-principal Jack McCray (an advising member on the Jazz Artists of Charleston board) wrote about the Legends Festival this week in his jazz column in the weekly Charleston Scene.
