As its name implies, Sideways Dance Company isn’t afraid to veer off the beaten path. The Atlanta-based contemporary dance company has been moving to its own rhythm since it was established in 2006 by Charlotte Foster “to present social and political opinion through the art of dance.” Foster, whose work has received high praise from choreographers including Steve Rooks of the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theatre and Wendy Perron of Dance Magazine, will lead Sideways in its Dance at Noon debut.
The company will perform Coexist, a collaboration with spoken word poet Lady Vee DaPoet. Foster describes the concert piece as an examination of “the interdependent web of human existence and the multifacets of humanity.”
Foster expects Coexist to appeal to a wide audience. “The concert includes a range of emotions and combines contemporary, jazz, and ballroom dance styles,” she says. “You do not need to be a dance critic in order to enjoy our performances.”
In Coexist, DaPoet performs live alongside the dancers, her words exploring beauty and ugliness. The dancers realize this notion through a variety of styles. The emotive concert enraptures the audience in the action as it explores these ideas.
