If you’ve been following our reviews, you know which events you should try to squeeze in during these last few days of Spoleto — shows like Brooklyn Rider, Speech and Debate, One Man Star Wars Trilogy, and Mary Kay Has a Posse are no-brainers. But there are a few one-off shows that may have slipped under your radar. Here’s what we recommend seeing tonight:
* The Mepkin Abbey concerts are a ways away for most Spoletians, but they’re worth the drive. Cause and Effect: Music in Response to the Holocaust features the “Silent Devotion” from Ernest Bloch’s Sacred Service followed by Olivier Messiaen’s Quartet for the End of Time, which was written in a German concentration camp in 1941. The concert is at 4 p.m., but show up at 2 p.m. for a free lecture on the Torah Scroll that was rescued from destruction by Polish monks.
* There are only two Sundown Poetry Series events left. Thursday’s poet is Ann Herlong-Bodman, whose book-length poetry manuscript was a runner-up in the 2009 S.C. Poetry Initiative Book Contest. Afterward, there will be a reception at Mary Martin Gallery. On Friday, Isle of Palms-based Susan Finch Stevens, author of chapbook Lettered Bones. A reception will follow at Charleston Artist Guild Gallery. Both events are free.
* There are also only two Upstairs at McCrady’s events left this season. On Thursday, the Cobblestone Quartet will perform songs from the Great American Songbook, like Ellington, Gershwin, Miles Davis, and Jobim. On Friday, the Charleston All-Stars featuring Ron Free is sure to be a sell-out.
* The Spotlight Concert Series presents a special concert tonight with Chopin, Champagne, and Candlelight at City Gallery at Waterfront Park. Pianist Volodymyr Vynnytsky will perform three of Chopin’s most beloved works at 8 p.m., followed by a champagne reception.
* Comedian Karen Mills performs a Charleston Breast Center benefit at the Physician’s Auditorium Thursday and Friday. Piccolo says she’s been compared to Bill Cosby and Ellen Degeneres.
