The Charleston area airwaves now have more country songs floating into radio receivers. Apex Broadcasting’s oldies/classic hits station WIOP FM flipped this week to a new country music format. Boasting “real country variety,” Kickin’ 95.9 FM kicked things off at 12 p.m. on Wed. Sept. 15 with spins of Alan Jackson’s “Gone Country” and the Zac Brown Band’s “Free.”

Kickin’ 95.9 joins 103.5 FM WEZL and The Wolf 96.9 FM WIWF in the local country radio scene. It’s not clear whether the new station will lean toward more contemporary or classic material. Perhaps the “variety” indicates a mix of both. A streaming audio link is available at kickin959.com.
