The Flagship Gallery will get a dose of estrogen Friday night as they play host to an all-female art exhibit, Material World.
Presented by Art Pimp, the show features works from local artists Kristy Bishop, Sarah Frierson, Nina Garner, and Hirona Matsuda.
“These up-and-coming artists have proved to be extremely passionate about their work and are very dedicated to pursuing careers as professional artists,” says Olivia Pool, owner of Art Pimp. “It is this that makes, and will continue to make, Charleston the creative hub it is.”
Kristy Bishop, a College of Charleston graduate, has been featured at Robert Lange Studios and Eye Level Art and received first place in the College of Charleston’s Salon Des Refuses in 2008. She creates textured artwork by mixing vibrant oil painting with other mediums.
Sarah Frierson continues to tackle the Charleston art scene after being named one of the City Paper’s “Ones to Watch” last fall. Her work illustrates forgotten and recovered memories and moments in her life by integrating oil and encaustic techniques, a process of painting with wax colors that are fixed with heat.
Material World will be Nina Garner’s fifth exhibit in Charleston thus far. She achieves a worn look with her photographs by staining them with tea or coffee, and she often uses dried flowers and vintage lace as decoration.
Hirona Matsuda is very resourceful, using any and all assets that the Charleston city streets have to offer. She pieces together 3-D representational scenes by taking ordinary, scavenged objects and turning them into artistic treasures.
Free and open to the public, the show will be from 5:30-7:30 p.m. at the Flagship Gallery, an inventive office environment that doubles as an art gallery. Food and beverages will be provided by Social Wine Bar.
