Local rock duo the Diesel Brothers — featuring guitarists/songwriters Dave Dunning and Donnie Polk — recently kicked off a weekly open-mic competition for original songwriters.

Presented by the Wild Wing Café and Yuengling Brewing Co., the Acoustic Throwdown started in the summer of 2009 as a five-week series hosted by the Larry David Project, comprised of Dunning and former bandmate Larry Strickland. The contest concluded at the downtown Wild Wing (36 N. Market St.). The winner was awarded a Martin D-40 acoustic guitar (worth over $3,000). An Epiphone acoustic guitar went as the second-place prize.

This month’s series continues into early March every Wednesday night at the downtown venue. The grand prizes include top-line Taylor and Epiphone acoustic guitars. Each week’s winner will compete in the finals. Songwriters may sign up at 9:30 p.m.
