In case you couldn’t tell by this week’s City Paper cover, or by all the articles, this weekend is the Southeastern Wildlife Exposition. Besides all the tents in Marion Square, the expo will have a couple of film screenings. So while this weekend’s weather may be perfect, there’s a few excuses to head indoors.
If you’re looking for a local slant, check out Common Ground: The Story of the ACE Basin, the defining rivers (the Ashepoo, Combahee, and Edisto) of the St. Helena sound. You’ll see how South Carolinians fought to preserve the area. Filmmaker Bill Bailey will be around for a Q&A session after each screening. Cullen Lea has an interview with Bailey here.
And now for a shameless plug for my preview of Lords of Nature: Life in a Land of Great Predators. It’s a doc by Green Fire Productions that’s narrated by Peter Coyote. Filmmakers Karen and Ralf Meyer spent time with scientists at Yellowstone and in other parts of the West, looking at how predators like wolves and grizzlies can actually have a positive effect on their ecosystems. College of Charleston biology professor Gorka Sancho will be on hand to answer questions after the film.
