At Monday night’s Annual Meeting Celebration, the Gibbes Museum of Art announced the winners of three major awards as well as a handful of new board members.
N.C.-based sculptor Patrick Dougherty was awarded the 2011 Elizabeth and Mallory Factor Prize for Southern Art. The prize, which includes a $10,000 cash award, acknowledges highly skilled artists whose work contributes to a new understanding of art in the South. Dougherty creates site-specific installations using twigs and branches held together by tension.
The Mary Whyte Art Educator Award went to Annie Purvis-Norman, a secondary school art teacher at Lincoln High School in McClellanville. A College of Charleston alum, Purvis-Norman was instrumental in creating the Mosaic Tile School Community Mural, a 200-foot student-assisted mural at the school that represents the small town’s Gullah community. She’ll take home $2,000 cash.
Lastly, the James S. Gibbes Philanthrophy Award went to Kiawah-based auxiliary group Gibbes, etc., which has given the museum more than $1 million since its inception in 2001. Co-founders Ellen Walkley, Ann Trees, Ruth Baker, and Cathy Marino accepted the award on behalf of the group’s 162 members.
The Gibbes board also announced its newest members: Virginia Brush, Susan Campbell, Lucile Cogswell, Lou Hammond, Barbie Kratovil, Michele Seekings, and Richard A. Smith.
