MONDAY. When MOJA is in town, nobody is too old for bedtime stories. The MOJA poetry and storytelling series begins tonight at sunset, where regional poets will showcase their work.
TUESDAY. Mary Walker will celebrate the opening of her new exhibit, Dreams and Nightmares, with a reception at Corrigan Gallery. Bret Mosley, a funky dobro player, is making his way from Brooklyn to debut his new album, Light & Blood, at Fiery Ron’s in West Ashley. He’s been known to play with soulful acts like Jerry Joseph, Kaki King, and Ivan Neville’s Dumpstaphunk. Mackie Boles and Lily Slay will perform as The Royal Tinfoil for a night of Americana blues with a dash of punk at the Recovery Room.
WEDNESDAY. The Olde North Charleston Picture House is screening Trigun: Badlands Rumble, which tells the story of bank robbers 20 years after a heist; expect explosives, betrayal, and political undertones. Cover all the culture bases at The Starving Artist Series: Hiding in an Indian Summer, where they’ll be showcasing artwork by Julio Cotto and EDGE, photography by Cuff Gleaton, jewelry by the Scarlet Poppy, and music by SunShine Boyz. And Kelly Dougherty and Justin Walling will present their new book, The Story of Che, which tells how a Guatemalan boy came to be a part of their family in the U.S. Cary Ann Hearst and Michael Trent will be there for the launch, which will be followed by a book signing with the authors.
THURSDAY. The recently merged galleries, Shelby Lee Gallery and Studio 151, will celebrate two of their artists, Colleen Wiessmann and Peggy Ellis, with fine art, wine, and hors d’oerves at this Artist Reception. Fiery Ron’s in West Ashley will have live music by one-man band Mississippi John Doude, who will perform a set of his signature bluesy folk/rock.
FRIDAY. The art walk is a night of wine, fine art, and stimulating discussion. Basically, it’s an upscale night for a no-scale price. What more can a freeloader ask for? SCOOP Studios will celebrate Karen Ann Myers’ new series, A Room of Her Own, which reveals what it means to be a woman in our modern times. Lambert Gray Gallery and Studios will host their grand opening with food-themed art and a cookbook signing with author Holly Herrick. And at a special Ladies Night, Dos Bandidos celebrates their heroines like Frida Kahlo and Janis Joplin with spray paint, acrylic paintings, and screen prints. On Kiawah, The Fall Festival will begin at 6 p.m. at Freshfields Village where they’ll have live music and family-friendly activities planned throughout the weekend.
SATURDAY. Eye Level Art on Spring Street will host Holy City Artists and Fleas with local handmade art and vintage wares for sale. Several members of Studio 151 will host the Seabrook and Kiawah Island and Art Guild Outdoor Art Festival on Saturday and Sunday. They’ll be celebrating with live music, art, food, and shopping.
SUNDAY. MOJA will conclude with a festival of crafts, food ,and live music. Awesome weather calls for more mingling, so head down King Street for this month’s Second Sunday. Traffic will be blocked off so you can dine in the streets or browse the outdoor racks on the sidewalk.
