The Carolina Chocolate Drops

A new version of the Carolina Chocolate Drops treated a room full of enthusiastic fans to a spirited set at the Music Farm on Wednesday night. The four-piece incarnation hit the stage around 9:30 p.m. They took their seats and unleashed their eclectic mix of sounds and styles. Rolling through foot-tapping favorites such as “Trouble on My Mind” and “Cornbread and Butterbeans,” the Grammy-Award nominees shifted gears periodically with songs like the haunting, Celtic-sounding “Snowden’s Jig.” Towards the end of the night, they let loose with their popular cover of Blu Cantrell’s “Hit ‘Em Up Style”.
The Chocolate Drops were clearly there to entertain. Each song seemed to be a crowd pleaser. Original members Dom Flemmons and Rhiannon Giddens were the most animated of the group, but all four performers, including multi-instrumentalist Hubby Jenkins from New York and cellist Leyla McCalla from New Orleans, played beautifully together creating a truly memorable night.
