Popular Charleston rock band the Shaniqua Brown have decided to break up. Singer Rachel Kate Gillon shared the news this week. She and guitarist Thomas Concannon, bassist Denis Blyth, and drummer David Bair formed the Shaniqua Brown in 2009.
They made a splash in the local scene as a high-energy, hard-hitting, wildly riffy rock act. While recording their recently-released, self-titled full-length album at Collective Recording early 2011, they enlisted studio engineer/co-owner Jamey Rogers as their second guitarist. The quintet won the Metal/Punk Band of the Year category by popular vote in the 2011 City Paper Music Awards.
Gillon says she approached the band about leaving to pursue new projects. The group then amicably decided to call it quits. “I’m very proud of what we accomplished in such a short time,” she told City Paper this week. “I haven’t quite decided my next endeavor, but I’m kind of letting it create itself and trying new and different scenarios. I consider this a growing point … changing, learning, discovering who I am and what I’m interested in.”
