What do oyster shooters, bourbon ginger drinks, and Holy City beer have in common? All of them will be featured at the City Paper’s booth in the culinary village at this weekend’s BB&T Charleston Wine + Food Festival. That’s right. For the first time, we’re hosting a booth, and our goal is to spotlight local products, people, and restaurants. If you’re planning to come out to the village, we hope you’ll stop by, throw back a shot, and say hey.
On Friday, from 11:30 a.m.-1 p.m., we’ll have authentic Southern fare from Poogan’s Porch, a classic Charleston restaurant that will be serving smoked brisket biscuits with pickled green tomatoes.
For happy hour (if happy hour started at 2 p.m.), we’ll have shots of Virgil Kaine, David Szlam’s new ginger-flavored bourbon (read our story about it on p. 19). He’s expecting it to do for flavored bourbon what Firefly did for vodka. We’ll let you be the judge.
On Saturday morning, we’ll have some hair of the dog with Charleston Mix, which makes a bold and spicy Bloody Mary. Clammer Dave Belanger will be coming by with some of his famous Capers Blades oysters to make that first drink of the day even more special.
In the afternoon, from 3-6 p.m., the La Bubbly will be flowing. We’ll have samples of the sparkling wine made by Brad Ball of Social in a collaboration with Nicki and Harry Root of Grassroots Wine and Helen Rice and Josh Nissenboim of Fuzzco. A perfect way to toast in the afternoon.
For Sunday, from 1-4 p.m., we’ll keep it very simple with some smoked fresh fish from Mark Marhefka paired with beers from Holy City Brewing Co., Charleston’s youngest brewery that brews in a variety of styles. Come on out and get the locals-only discount for Sunday. We’ll see you there.
