Local roller-derby squads the Holy City Heartbreakers and the Swampfoxes threw knees and elbows in a Sunday bout that was so tight, it rivaled the spandex of their gold and black hot-shorts. Skaters like the Swampfoxes’ Green-Eyed Sniper and the Heartbreakers’ Ringo Starrdust wowed the audience as lead jammers shot around the rink like torpedoes to rack up points.

While the competition went head to head, in between jams, the girls took to joking with their opponents. If you got there when the doors first opened, you’d see them practice whipping into turns and sliding on their knees across the floor.

The match closed with a seesaw of points, each team constantly at the other’s heels. In the last few jams, the Heartbreakers brought their points up to 102, with Green-Eyed Sniper scrambling to score the Swampfoxes nine more points at the last minute. The Heartbreakers won with a final score of 102-89. Even with the defeat, the Swampfoxes still had smiles on their faces that matched the Heartbreakers’ as both teams skated the perimeter, high-fiving the audience.
