Local hip-hop phenom Righchus released a new music video Tuesday for the song “Stroker’s Row.” Not to give too much away, but it features trippy nighttime shots involving a light pen of some sort and an anatomically correct neon heart.
The video was directed by Taylor Engel, who attended Academic Magnet High School and has worked on several movie and music video projects in Los Angeles. Engel previously directed a video for the Righchus track “Go Hard” that showed the rapper getting his teeth kicked in late at night at a Columbia car wash. Like the video for “Stroker’s Row,” it ends with a twist.
“Stroker’s Row” comes from Righchus’ latest mixtape, Black Cradles, which was released July 26 as a free download on livemixtapes.com. Max Berry, the main producer on the new Righchus tracks, says it was his favorite song of the set. He had already recorded most of the song in his bedroom studio on James Island when he decided it needed some saxophone. So he invited local musician Ian Sanchez to lay down some sax improvisations, and the result was a perfect atmospheric match.
“He came in here and just killed it,” Berry says. “He played maybe five minutes’ worth, and then I just chopped it up and took the parts that I liked and scattered them around the song … I said, ‘See you later, Ian. Nice to meet you.’ It just turned out awesome.”
Righchus has put out some pretty slick videos in the past. Check out this recent one for the song “Mussolini,” which was shot by director 5 Dollaz in Waterfront Park and on the steps of the U.S. Custom House. It also includes a cameo at the end by Tony the Peanut Man:
