If you’re downtown Tuesday morning and you hear a bell that just keeps on ringing, take a minute to remember what happened 11 years ago in New York City, Arlington, Va., and a field near Shanksville, Penn. And if you see a firefighter, remember to say thank you.
The Charleston Fire Department will hold a bell-ringing ceremony on Tuesday morning at the Old Fire Department Bell Tower (116 Meeting St.) to memorialize the firefighters who died responding to the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001. Starting at 9:58 a.m., the time when the first of the two World Trade Center towers fell, the bell will be rung 343 times, once for every member of the New York City Fire Department who died that day.
