As you all know, online polls are notoriously unreliable. If they weren’t, then Ron Paul would be president of the United States right now. Hell, he’d also be People magazine’s Sexiest Man Alive, the People’s Choice Awards winner for Actor in a Comedy/Musical, and the next person to be sanctified by the Catholic Church and the Church of the Subgenius.
So make of this what you will, but according to a Charleston County Republican Party poll, former Charleston County Councilman Curtis Bostic has taken a commanding lead with 479 votes, followed by former Dorchester County Sheriff Ray Nash with 262. The next closest challenger is current state Rep. Peter McCoy at 46 votes. The race’s frontrunner — former S.C. Gov. Mark Sanford — comes in fifth place with a paltry 27.
Call me crazy, but I believe that on March 20 — the day after the special election primary for the First District race — we won’t see either Bostic or Nash taking a victory lap around Marion Square. When it comes to these matters, winners don’t waste their time directing their troops to an online poll. They send them out on the streets to knock on doors and to raise campaign cash.
