Riley lays out tax hike plans to fund school, downtown policing
Mayor Joe Riley is proposing a $40 tax increase on homes valued over $250,000 that would fund 19 additional officers to patrol public and private elementary schools in the city, in addition to more more officers to patrol the “entertainment zone” around bars, restaurants, and attractions downtown and build more fire stations, hire fire fighters, and buy fire engines.

Cannon announces jail’s accreditation

Strom Thurmond’s eldest daughter Washington-Williams dies at 87
Essie Mae Washington-Williams passed away Monday. Correspondence between former segregationist, judge, S.C. governor, and U.S. Sen. Strom Thurmond and his oldest daughter, who he never publicly acknowledged during his life, shed some light on the nature of their life-long relationship of mutual respect. Thurmond died in 2003.
